As an Efik girl I have love for these set of people called the “Ibos”. I was also told by an Ibo person that the “I” stands intelligent “B” for brave and “O” for obedience. That really help to clarified why the Ibos are unique. Igbo are one of the most highly educated people in Nigeria. If not the most educated, but the Yorubas don’t clown around when it come to education. So it is hard to ascertain which between them. The Ibo originated from the Jews tribe in Africa allegedly.
Should we talk about their street credibility? Ah! Nna menhhh…That a post for another day. An Igbo person will package your excreta and sell it back to you and you will gladly pay your hard-earned money for it without a second thought. I saw a movie the wolf of wall street which starred Leonardo DiCaprio. The was a scene where he gave his Co-star a pen to sell. I was like, you have got to be kidding me. Try something harder and give it to a Nigerian man from Eastern region. He will build mansions in village from it, Import and export it to all parts of world.
Few days before this post I decided to go and observed the strategies igbo people used in selling their goods. I sat down for hours and still did not gather much knowledge, one of the reasons is “na the work wey them dey do” in the words of Bisola of big brother Nigerian. buying and selling is like a way of life for them. You can not take it away from them. You can not beat them to it, except you have special talent. I was so intrigued by the passion and fire in their eyes while doing their thing.
The igbo are so brave and resilient. It is a fact, that the is no place in the world you will not find an igbo man. They will develop your place and open your eyes to the great opportunities you were sitting on. Someone once said “run away from a place where the is no man from the Eastern Nigeria there”. They have this proverb which says “elder cannot be at home and watch a she-goat deliver or give birth on tether”. That means an Ibo man can not be in a place and allowed things go wrong. They always find solutions
An Ibo man will lost everything and still gather the ashes and start again. Even if all his containers catch fire or sink he will bound back and find another entrance. They can brave anything just to achieve their goal. Ibo man will still want to put his head in a particular place, even if they killed and imprisoned non indigenes there. They are not afraid of anything. They will sell their house and cars. rent a small apartment and live there start a new business
This set of risk takers are ready to trek day and night, jump about to crashing airplane into available ship, if the ship sink, they swim out and find a vehicle and keep going till they arrived the next opportunity. The nature of their love for importation and exportation make them like settling near port. They first settled in port Harcourt then moved to Lagos their vision is not always limited to one place. They are in constant mobilization. Igbos are the major contributors to the social-economic development of Lagos State.
An Ibo man will obey you to the last drop, just to get what he wants. That is why most of them serve their master for years, until they are free to be on their way own. The master usually set them up. Then in turn will become master to others. It is a process they go through. So obedience is just a natural principle for them.
