As an Ibiobio girl, I have admiration for these set of people called the Ibos. I was once told by an Ibo person that the “I” stands intelligent “B” for brave and “O” for obedience. It’s really help to make me understand why the Ibos are unique especially when it comes to business. The Igbo are one of the most highly educated ethnic group in Nigeria. If not the most educated, but the Yorubas don’t play around when it come to education. So it is hard to ascertain which between the two ethnic groups. The igbos believe that they originated from the Jewish tribe, allegedly.
There are so many unique attributes about the igbos. Should we talk about their street credibility? Ah! Nna menhhh…….. That’s a post for another day. An Igbo person will package your excreta and sell it back to you and you will blindly and gladly pay your hard-earned money for it without a second thought.
I watched a movie the wolf of wall street which starred Leonardo DiCaprio. The was a scene where he gave his Co-star a pen to sell. I was like, you have got to be kidding me, try something harder. Give it to a Nigerian man from Eastern region. He will build mansions in village from that pen and open thirty three shops in Alaba and ariaria main market just by selling pen.
Few days before this write up. I decided to go and observed the strategies ways Igbo people use in selling their market. I sat down for hours and still did not gather much. Exporting and importing “na the work wey them dey do” in the words of Bisola of big brother Nigerian. Buying and selling is a way of life for them. You can not take it away from them. You can not beat them to it, except you have special talent. I was so intrigued by the passion and fire in their eyes while selling their market.
The igbos are so brave and resilient. The is no place in the world you will not find an igbo man. They will develop your place and open your eyes to the great opportunities you were sitting and walking on. Someone once said “run away from a place where the is no igbo man”. They have this proverb that says “elder cannot be at home and watch a she-goat deliver or give birth on tether”. This means an igbo man can not be in a place and allowed things go wrong. They always find solutions
An Ibo man will lost everything and still gather the ashes and start again. Even if all his containers caught fire or sink he will bound back and find another entrance. They can brave anything just to achieve their goal. Ibo man will still want to put his head in a particular place, even if they killed and imprisoned non indigenes there. They are not afraid of anything.
This set of risk takers are ready to trek day and night, jump out of about to crash Airplane into available ship, if the ship sink, they swim out and find a road and keep going till they arrived their next opportunity.
The nature of their love for importation and exportation make them like settling near port. They first settled in port Harcourt before moving to Lagos. Their vision is not limited to one place. They are in constant movements. Igbos are the major contributors to the social-economic development of Lagos State.
An Ibo man will obey you to his last drop of blood, just to get what he wants. That is why most of them serve their master for years, until they are free to be on their way own. The master usually set them up. So obedience is just a natural principle for them to get and hit their target.
